Wood and steel

Here’s a live, duet version of one of my favorite cuts from Chris Thile’s beautiful “New Grass”/Jazz album Not All Who Wander Are Lost. Some of you might be familiar with his work as a member of Nickel Creek, but if you haven’t heard “Not All Who Wander…”, you haven’t really heard the best of Chris’s mandolin playing…

Thanks for the tip. I just downloaded some of the tracks from the album. I really am getting to like the bluegrass instrumentation when it is pushed beyond the traditional chord progressions, although I still am not used to hearing bass without drums.

    Glad you liked it, John.

I think that when it comes to bluegrass, the bass is like the kick drum and the all the other instruments are like parts of a “virtual” drum set. Guitar, mandolin, banjo, even fiddle can double as percussion instruments.

By the way: you win the coveted “First Comment on Blog Here Now Grand Prize”… which is… yet to be determined.
