As the ironies pile up higher than NFL linemen on a fumbled ball, and the various media-spins cancel each other out to a wobbly rightward rotation, the question appears to be: will the House Democrats have the fortitude to hold their noses and vote for the Senate bill? Or will a year’s worth of work go down in huge bonfire flames, over which the Republicans can brew tea for at least the next three years?
I don’t have a lot hope for the former option, but stay tuned.
I don’t hold much hope either. IMHO, our country has become a modern equivalent of the Roman “mob”. We don’t have the stamina nor the time to endure long term change much more read health care bills that are over 100 pages long (or 1100).
We are also divided and stubborn in our divisions. There are a few independents that bully candidates with their ever-shifting alliances. They are fickle. One day they like the Democrats. The next day the Libertarians. The next day the Republicans. Whomever shouts loudest those words that appeal to them most wins! Because the rest of us that strongly identify with our political parties aren’t willing or ready to let go that identification no matter how ridiculous or stupid our parties appear.
I keep hearing about there being some grand “message” to this victory in Massachusetts. Really? One state represents the entire shift of the country? Maybe. Probably not.
For me, if there’s any kind of message here it’s that we’ve become a nation of snippets, phrases and mantras talking heads on TV sets keep repeating. We are lambs. We are lemmings. We barely read! We listen to those talking heads spewing forth the same words over and over again, especially the words we agree with. It’s numbing.
So I guess I’m going to have to like tea — crappy, expensive tea but tea nonetheless. I will pray for coffee.
